About Rosendal

Own your own slice of Paradise

Situated just 3 hours from Johannesburg, nestled by the Witteberge (forming a portion of the Drakensberg foothills), lies the small picturesque town of Rosendal. The community is largely a farming and arts community offering a home to approximately 50 full-time residents and is a popular weekend destination for a number of city dwellers, either owning a get-away cottage or frequenting one of a number of self-catering or overnight guest accommodations.

It has become a popular tourist destination for those that really want to get away from it all, known for its spectacular mountain- and savannah veld scenery. The natural beauty is enhanced by green willow trees lining fast-flowing creeks populated by a large number of species of trees, shrubs, succulents, wild flowers and grasses growing in the fertile soil. Vultures and Blue Cranes are just a two of the many species of bird frequenting the area. The sunsets over the craggy cliff-tops alone are a reason to visit. Winter-time frequently boasts stunning snow-covered vistas.

There are several art galleries, antique stores, a country hotel and a restaurant bar that hosts monthly dinner theatres. Rosendal village is physically separated from Mautse, the former township, which is a vibrant, proud community. Rosendal-Mautse is a pleasant place to live. The town has a relaxed vibe; everyone is made welcome. The town and surrounding area have a number of historical sandstone buildings that are really worth a visit.

If you are looking for shopping malls, cinemas and night clubs, Rosendal is not for you. If, however, you are looking for a place where you can get away from the bustle of city life, a place where you can get in touch with unspoilt nature, art, hiking, horse-riding and visits to interesting farming industries or just doing nothing, then Rosendal will live up to its reputation of being a haven of tranquillity. Visit us, have a picnic in one of the many available spots, take a walk to Rosa’s for a coffee, a drink or a meal where you may well run into one of the many artists or locals, and see for yourself!
